Bernalillo County Government Welcomes New Day

By Maggie Hart Stebbins
Chair, Bernalillo County Commission
Last Friday, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners made the critical decision to change county management and move in a new direction.
With three newly-elected members this is a very different commission from years past, and we have fresh ideas about how government should serve its customers. Last week's decision will allow us to move ahead in the pursuit of a more accountable and responsible government.
We have already begun the work of finding a new county manager, and this Friday the commission will hold a special meeting to discuss strategies for recruiting qualified and talented candidates who share our vision of greater openness, accountability, efficiency, fiscal responsibility, evenhandedness and customer service.
As we begin this open search, we are asking for the community's input and help.
We will be meeting with the business community, neighborhood associations, nonprofits, faith-based groups, citizens and Bernalillo County employees to ask what you, as customers, want in your next county manager.
This will help to ensure an open and accountable search for the best and brightest individual who will move the county forward in the most responsible and effective way.
This transition will surely bring challenges, but it is important to remember that change brings new ideas, innovation and resiliency.
I am excited and optimistic as I look to the bright future that lies ahead for Bernalillo County and its residents and employees. Bernalillo County is a great place to live, and our county workers are among the best employees anywhere in New Mexico.
I thank our employees for their hard work and I also challenge them to help us make your county government even better.
Finally, I ask county residents to join this commission in not dwelling on the past, but in looking forward to the new opportunities and improvements that we will make together.
