Speak Up!

IT IS BEING argued by members of the Legislature that providing driver licenses to illegal aliens has reduced the cost of automobile insurance. I would rather pay extra for my automobile insurance than subsidize the harboring of someone who has broken the laws of my country. — J.E.H.
AN UNEMPLOYED gentleman sent a letter to the Journal complaining that he called Workforce Solutions "nearly 10,000 times" over six weeks to no avail. If Workforce Solutions is open eight hours a day, five days a week, even figuring 9,000 times, he would have had to average making 37.5 calls per hour. Doesn't leave much time to look for a job! — P.M.
IF THE public gave teachers the respect they deserve, there would be no need for unions! — K.G.
CAN SOMEONE help me understand why an elected county sheriff needs an AR-15 assault rifle at a the expense of taxpayers? During World War II, Gen. George Patton led the U.S. Third Army armed with a pearl-handled .38-caliber revolver and a Jeep. Perhaps the sheriff should start off with a little less firepower. — G.H.
THE UNM explanation is "that the salary book won't be released digitally because a computer file never is created." Really? And you typed it on an IBM Selectric? How stupid do you think we are? — S.A.P.
IF THE governor ends "social promotion" in New Mexico schools where will we find replacements for politicians, attorneys and judges? — J.T.
I ENJOYED THE fine Oscar-nominated short films at the Guild with my daughter. The cinema was packed. Upon exiting, I walked in disbelief! Intelligent moviegoers left behind so much garbage: used Kleenex, popcorn buckets, cups! This crowd was well-to-do driving off in their Euro-sedans! Wise up. Be responsible! — P.V.M.
GOV. SUSANA Martinez wants to merge state agencies. Rep. Don Tripp said, "I don't think we'll realize much savings out of that — $1 million is the most." Our government and APS are facing budget deficits because legislators like Tripp treat $1 million like chump change. — J.B.
BRAVO! MAYOR Richard Berry for bringing to light the pigeon problem. Why is it OK for an individual to endanger the population's health because they like to feed the birds? There's a reason that in New York they call them "flying rats." I have a neighbor who feeds hundreds of them and will not stop. — J.P.
I DON'T see public rest rooms at the new Bachechi Open Space! The row of porta potties is an eyesore! — P.A.R.
"FMB — Forever My Brothers" — give me a break! How corny is that! And who believes that it stands for "Forever My Brothers?" Shame on the firemen who wear this emblem. It is not only disrespectful to the mayor, but it shows absolutely no class on their part. Albuquerque Fire Department employees make excellent salaries and need to stop whining. — J.J.
HAD A REALLY good laugh when I read state Democratic Party chairman Javier Gonzales' column about being gung ho to hold the Republicans accountable. Where was he the past eight years when his party should have been held accountable? You go, guy! You're way too late to be credible! — M.G.
SEEING ARTICLES about people helping people, such as the firemen collecting things for the victims of the apartment fire, is so heartening. It's much like the post 9/11 mentality. There was such an outpouring of charity! We all realize how blessed we are, how much we have, when there are so many with nothing. — S.O.
IF BILL Richardson had spent one hundredth of the Rail Runner cost on supervising natural gas infrastructure, we would not have had the gas crisis. — J.C.R.
ABOUT THE new rule which may criminalize motorists who come within five feet of bicyclists, is the police department going to cite cyclists who ride on roads which don't allow motorists to move five feet away without jeopardizing other motorists and/or the ongoing flow of traffic? — M.M.
