TO THOSE who think that required car insurance equates to mandated health insurance, think again. First, not everyone has a car. If the government mandated car purchases and then required insurance, it would be the same. Additionally, car insurance that is mandated is liability to protect others, not one's self. — S.S.
REGARDING worker compensation payouts to drunk public employees, why not require the worker to be in compliance with employment contract terms, such as being sober on the job? — D.L.
WHAT KIND of imbecile would leave weapons, presumably loaded, in an unlocked car? Or for that matter even a locked car? — W.E.B.
SHERIFFS, POLICE chiefs, front-line cops are all showing us ... take-home cars don't deter crime. Time to stop the practice. — R.Z.
WAY TOO MUCH space in the Journal wasted on Bill Richardson, especially his opinion of his administration. — D.F.
IF ANOINTING an incredible array of incompetent buffoons to important positions of authority at the University of New Mexico is considered a meritorious accomplishment and thus deserving of professional assessment, I'd suspect that the faculty would have to assign Bill Richardson an A+! — J.W.G.
GOODBYE BILL. I am sorry you couldn't get the North Koreans to name anything after you! Nice try anyway. — J.L.
THE MINUTE Rep. Steve Pearce arrives on Capitol Hill is the last minute he will remember the working men that voted for him. At that moment he will only care for billionaires, Wall Street, multinational CEOs and environmental destruction. The electronic herd is ready to pounce. — B.B.L.
I WATCHED the KOB-TV interview with the outgoing governor. Let's see, what he said was "I'm leaving the state of New Mexico with about a $450 million deficit — that's why I rate myself with an A for success." Are you kidding me? Let's spend a few more million that we don't have. —J.E.H.
CUBA, WITH THE help of China, is drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico is drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. can't. If you like $4 and $5 gasoline keep on electing liberal Democrats. — D.L.P.
ONE OUT OF every four people who take the test to join the armed forces fail the test. You have to be monumentally stupid to fail that test. The government is going to have to raise taxes on everyone in order to pay the welfare for these deadbeats and the dropouts who can't even graduate from high school. Meanwhile there are the children of illegal immigrants who want to go to college. — T.K.
I THINK the comic strips "Zits" and "9 Chickweed Lane" are absolutely hilarious! — R.M.W.
SO 17,000 WORKERS at both labs in New Mexico are not getting raises? The pay freeze hurts the 501(c)3 charitable organizations that benefit from the workers at Sandia National Laboratories. There will be (fewer) turkeys donated because the higher ups don't contribute a dime because they make six figures and they're cheap! — L.O.L.
THE CARPENTER'S Union is picketing again. Their complaint: Non-union carpenters are doing the work. Contractor response: Our workers are paid the same as union workers. Question: What would those workers be paid if that union didn't exist? Answer: Not much. Conclusion: We need to show some tolerance. — K.M.C.
IT WAS INTERESTING that in the Journal a third of the pro-Rep. Martin Heinrich letters were from Los Ranchos, the wealth enclave that tries to discourage outsiders from driving through. — J.A.W.
