Speak Up!
GOV. BILL RICHARDSON'S deputy chief of staff, Gilbert Gallegos, was surprised that Susana Martinez "doesn't understand the state budget and the growth of Medicare" because she ignored it during her campaign. Excuse me Mr. Gallegos, you and Bill obviously didn't understand it either. — J.F.G.
THE BANNER line on A-2 in the Journal stated: "We'll Have Reminders After Richardson's Gone." I submit that that's a very astute observation, and the clearest of them will not come from a highway interchange. — W.I.
AFSCME IS urging Susana Martinez to include Democrats in her Cabinet. Were they concerned that Bill Richardson include Republicans in his Cabinet? I think not. — J.H.H.
I FOUND THE article "N.M. Driver's Licenses a Global Attraction" very interesting. My husband lost his driver's license a year ago. Yet, in order to get a new one, he had to prove his residency in New Mexico. And he has been licensed in New Mexico for more than 40 years! — C.C.
AFTER READING the article, it occurred to me how to fix our state budget crisis. First, Gov. Bill Richardson holds a garage sale at the Governor's Mansion; this should net a few $100,000. Second, charge illegal immigrants $10,000 each for a New Mexico driver's license. We'll recover the money in no time! — J.C.S.
SOME DAY Susana Martinez's time in the Governor's Office will be up. Will she tell her appointees it is their tough luck they have given up other jobs to work in her administration? The flap about Gov. Bill Richardson's appointees going into civil service jobs is nonsense! — C.D.
A WRITER in the op/ed section suggests high schools have classes teaching the Hispanic culture to help students hold onto their culture. We suggest also then why not have classes teaching the Anglo culture since Anglo students are the minority now. Or is having Anglo classes considered racist? — G.K.
FORMER GOV. Toney Anaya proposed a high-speed bullet train between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. More than two decades later, we have the Rail R\unner. This service is more affordable than driving my car, more relaxing, and sometimes it is more desirable than carpooling. Of course, there must be accountability in the finances of the Rail Runner operation, but I wonder if there are any commuter train systems which run on fares alone? — A.L.V.
GARFIELD MIDDLE School entertained veterans at a Nov. 11 school assembly. The band played a stirring rendition of "God Bless America." There was an impressive precision marching parade by the Garfield ROTC. Thanks to KOB-TV for filming the event and showing it on the news. — A.B.
WE DON'T NEED to spend money on red-light cameras or camera speed traps — just get the police to get out and do their job of enforcing existing traffic laws! Rarely do we see police presence or actual traffic enforcement on our city streets or expressways, either marked or unmarked cars! — S.A.
BRILLIANCE IN San Francisco with banning toys from Happy Meals, all to save children from weight gain. Every child I've seen with a Happy Meal has left most of the food to play with the toy. With no toy, it seems logical the entire Happy Meal will get eaten. So much for brilliance! — M.B.B.
WHILE WAITING to mail a package, a young woman ahead of me presented an unwrapped box to the postal worker. He wrapped the box in bubble wrap and got it packaged for her and waited for her to address it. He weighed it and she paid. By that time, there were 13 people in line. Why can't people come with their packages ready to mail like others? — M.H.
POST OFFICE going bankrupt? Stop the pricey commercials and printing so many designer stamps. We all know how it works. I still wonder where the birthday card and check went that we mailed to our grandchild in Malibu, Calif., last June. It never came back to us, either. — E.S.S.
