Speak Up!!
I DO NOT blame Clara Apodaca for incorrectly spending funds meant for projects at the Hispanic Cultural Center. I blame the Bill Richardson administration and the Legislature for the willy-nilly way in which they gave the taxpayers' money away without any oversight to see if it is being spent correctly. — S.S.
THE CATHOLIC Church is a bit confused when it comes to its population count. The actual numbers of Catholics should not be a reflection of those who show up at Christmas and Easter. Why is the church trying to drive away the people who show up to Mass on a regular basis? The church should be happy that the cohabiting couples are still attending Mass! — K.G.
TO ALL THE writers who penned scathing letters about Archbishop Michael Sheehan's "hypocrisy" and "lack of tolerance," even bringing up the long-dead issue of pedophile priests, I believe the words of Cicero are apropos: "When you have no basis for an argument, abuse the plaintiff." — D.S.
THE POLICE union lashing out at the Torres family over the death of Christopher Torres is the best recent example of the phrase "adding insult to injury" the city of Albuquerque has seen. Shame on them also for criticizing Mayor Richard Berry for stating the obvious — APD officers need more training! — S.R.
ON THE FLIP side, if the Torres family was really concerned about their family member, couldn't they have turned Christopher in before police served a warrant for his arrest? As much time as police supposedly had to research his medical history, the family had just as much time to take care of it themselves. — J.R.
COPS PROTECT US. They catch robbers in the act, pull drunk drivers off the street and give assistance when we wreck our vehicles. Cops are underappreciated heroes. However, when it comes to driving on the road, they are almost as bad as everyone else. I have witnessed a cop changing lanes or turning without using his signal. They often speed as well. And the most shocking, I have observed cops driving down the road without a seat belt. — J.E.
SINCE WE always need to conserve water, I wonder why restaurants don't ask if you want water or at least serve in a small glass which can be refilled. Wonder if all the water left in glasses were to be poured in a container back in the kitchen somewhere just to see how much water is actually wasted just from the water left in the glasses on the table in just a single day? — M.D.
AMERICA IS and has been a great country despite all of its entitlements. However, the worm is turning! — R.J.S.
PNM: FOOD IS costing more. Gasoline is costing more. But Social Security remains the same. Use your high priced lobbyists to help us get Social Security on track with inflation and we'll help you get rate increases that are on track with what's fair. — K.M.C.
A RECENT study shows that UNM faculty salaries are far below the national average for public universities. Yet when UNM tried to keep its faculty — and staff, who make even less — from another pay cut, Gov. Susana Martinez objected. Perhaps she believes that UNM really should be more like Walmart. — R.D.B.
I WAS appalled to see the front page photo of the Business Outlook feature "Learning to use a machine gun?" Could you not have found a more fitting photo to support the great feature article about Leadership New Mexico's class? Enough gun problems in the Wild West. — C.B.S.
A LETTER WRITER raised the issue of "disparate treatment" in the cases of Judge W. John Brennan and Judge Robert E. Robles. In the former there were possession of cocaine and attempting to elude a DWI checkpoint involved. Justice is never blind in Albuquerque. Brennan got off easier considering charges. — A.A.
