Amendment on Gay Marriage Rejected

Journal Staff Reports
          Amendment on Gay Marriage Rejected
SANTA FE — A proposed constitutional amendment that would outlaw gay marriage in New Mexico was rejected Saturday at its first committee stop.
The House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee tabled the definition-of-marriage measure on a 5-2 vote after brief discussion.
It would have asked state voters whether to add a section to the constitution that said marriage "shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman."
Opponents said the issue doesn't belong in the constitution and such legislation is hurtful and discriminatory to gay and lesbian families.
The panel's five Democrats voted to table it; the two Republicans voted against tabling.
        Restaurant Gun Bill Clears Committee
SANTA FE — A proposal to allow handguns in some New Mexico restaurants easily cleared a House committee on Saturday.
The bill (HB83), supported by the National Rifle Association, would allow concealed carry licensees to take their guns into nearly 600 restaurants that have beer and wine licenses.
The licensees would still be prohibited from drinking alcohol, and restaurants would have the right to opt out and post signs banning firearms.
The New Mexico Restaurant Association is opposed to the bill, citing concerns about liability.
