Journal Takes Top Prizes in Newspaper Contest

          Albuquerque Journal reporters Hailey Heinz and T.J. Wilham and photographer Jim Thompson won the Associated Press Managing Editors's top awards for Story of the Year and Photo of the Year on Saturday.
        The Journal also won the overall General Excellence award for its newspaper division during the New Mexico Press Association-Associated Press Managing Editors 2009 Better Newspapers Contest.
        Wilham and Heinz won for their coverage surrounding the death of a little boy whose body was buried at an Albuquerque playground. The two also won first place for series and continued coverage.
        In addition, Wilham won first place in the feature writing category, while Heinz won first place in the news writing category.
        Thompson won photo of the year with an image of a group of runners. He also won first place for general news photo and for sports photo. In addition, Thompson won first place in the Weekly Division 1 category for the Mountain View Telegraph.
        The Journal took first place in the Public Service category. Reporters Thom Cole, Mike Gallagher, Colleen Heild, Jeff Jones, editorial cartoonist John Trever and the editorial page staff contributed to the award.
        Other Journal awards:
        • Scott Sandlin and Gallagher won first place for breaking news story; Jeff Proctor won second place.
        • Martin Salazar won first place for investigative reporting.
        • Winthrop Quigley won first place for columns; Joline Gutierrez Krueger won second.
        • Richard Metcalf won second place for business writing.
        • Ed Johnson won second place for sports writing.
        • Marla Brose won first place for photo series.
        • The Journal staff won second place for design and typography.
        The Clovis News-Journal won the General Excellence award for its division.
        The Associated Press Member of the Year award went to the Las Cruces Sun-News. The award is presented each year to the AP member newspaper that best exhibits the news-sharing spirit of the AP cooperative.
