Canine influenza is no reason to panic
Canine influenza has been confirmed in New Mexico, but there's no need to panic.   (Friday, November 06, 2009)

Poor cat can't get rid of his itching
Q: Our cat, Bob, has several oozy, itchy patches of skin, especially around his head, chin and neck. He's on his second round of antibiotics plus prednisone. Just when the patches start to scab over, he scratches them and opens them up again. Our vet gave him a steroid shot on the first visit, and suggested treating him with Frontline even though she didn't see any evidence of infestation.   (Friday, November 06, 2009)

Surgery just one option for barkers
Q: We are considering moving into a retirement community. My Chihuahua barks a lot. It has been suggested that I have his vocal cords cut. That seems very cruel to me and I am reluctant to have it done.   (Friday, October 30, 2009)

Addison's can be managed
Q: My 2-year old Labrador retriever has been diagnosed with Addison's disease. I would appreciate your commenting on Addison's, what it is, symptoms to watch for, and treatment. Our Lab is recovering due to the expertise of our veterinarians and our dedication to his quality of life.   (Friday, October 23, 2009)

Calendar winners chosen
Readers, you sent more than 750 photos of your dog, cat, turtle, emu, guinea pig, horse and other pets for the calendar contest sponsored by the Journal and Best Friends Pet Services.   (Friday, October 23, 2009)

Pets have special concerns on holiday
So they put you in a costume that makes people laugh because your face is so serious and your outfit so silly. Then they jump up and answer the door every time the bell rings, tell you to shush when you try to warn them about monsters, and hand out candy and don't give you any.   (Friday, October 23, 2009)

Take it slowly, wisely when adding a pet
Pets are not like potato chips: You can have just one. But what if you want more?   (Friday, October 16, 2009)

In turtles vs. dogs, reptiles are losers
Q: I have box turtles, and our toy poodle has caught and chewed on several. Two already died, two survivors I have put Neosporin on the cracks and puncture wounds, a few peeled away outer shell pieces. I kept them outside in an enclosed sandbox, but they have managed to dig out and our poodle has discovered them. An article on home remedies for injured turtles may still help someone else.   (Friday, October 16, 2009)

Cat only has eyes for them
Q: Help! We are being held hostage by the neighbor's cat — he won't go home. About once a week we crate him and take him home. He stays there until they can't stand his wails. He's back in our yard immediately. We DO NOT feed him or encourage him in any way. We have chased him, taken the water hose to him, sprayed him with canned air. We have two indoor/outdoor cats who can't enjoy their own yard — he chases them back in the house.   (Friday, October 09, 2009)

Shelters seeing no dearth of purebreds
For about 30 normally sociable miniature schnauzers, the party at Bow Wow Blues on a recent Saturday was a treat. There was the schnauzer gang, schnauzer fans, cake.   (Friday, October 09, 2009)
