Football and baseball, those other American sports, are all about grass and equipment and, most of all, other people. Basketball is a perfect fit for lonely New Mexico: A hoop, the sun, some dirt packed hard and the whump of a $15 ball against a plywood backboard.
Journal photographer Kitty Clark and reporter Leslie Linthicum spent two weeks traveling the state and talking to the people who love basketball.
