Extravaganza Moves to Stadium

Journal Staff Report
Rio Rancho residents can wave their American flags and wear red, white and blue this weekend at the city's Fourth of July celebration.
Citywide events include a bike-decorating contest for children, Fourth of July parade and a fireworks extravaganza.
Peter Wells, city of Rio Rancho spokesman, said the city is expecting several hundreds of people at the fireworks show, which has been going on each of the past 20 years.
"It's one of the biggest and best firework displays in the state," he said about the half-hour show. "There will be some new things, but it won't disappoint."
The fireworks venue was moved from Loma Colorado Park to the Rio Rancho High School football stadium, which will have front-row seats to the action, food and entertainment, Wells said.
Here are the city's Fourth of July events:
        Saturday
        • Fourth of July parade, 10 a.m., from Country Club Drive to Southern Boulevard, ending on Pinetree Road.
        • Second annual bike-decorating contest, for children ages 5 to 15, who can register starting at 9 a.m. in Joe's Pasta House restaurant parking lot on 3201 Southern Boulevard. Participants will ride in the parade.
        • Fourth of July ceremony, 11 a.m., Veterans Monument Park.
        • Fireworks extravaganza, starts 9:30 p.m., Rio Rancho High School football stadium, 301 Loma Colorado Blvd. Parking is $5 at the high school.
        Saturday and Sunday
        • Corbin Hayes 4-on-4 Flag Football Tournament, Rio Rancho High School football stadium. For a schedule of games, visit rrflagfootball.com.
