Cleveland To Host NMSO Concert

By David Steinberg
Journal Staff Writer
Yes, it's mostly classical music, but you can bring the kids to next week's New Mexico Symphony Orchestra concert in Rio Rancho.
        And it's free.
"We try to do these concerts very informally," said Roger Melone, who will be conducting the May 12 concert.
"Some of the children are dancing around to the music. I think that's terrific, and so does the orchestra. It's a positive experience about a symphony orchestra playing."
The NMSO will be giving a Neighborhood Concert at Sue Cleveland High School, 4800 Laban Road NE.
The music starts at 7 p.m.
The program includes selections from the score of the Broadway musical "Phantom of the Opera," as well as a host of light classical tunes.
They include Johann Strauss' "Thunder and Lightning Polka," a Spanish dance by Manuel de Falla, a French march by Jean Robert Planquette and two works by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky — the polonaise from his opera "Eugene Onegin" and his Capriccio Italien.
"I think these concerts reach lots of different corners of the population," said Melone, who is the NMSO's resident conductor.
"We have some people who don't know anything about classical music ... and we have some people who go to the symphony anyway, who adore the symphony and know something about classical music."
He said the concert was made free by Sandoval County.
