Trash Dropoff in RR

Journal Staff Report
A household hazardous waste collection and pharmaceutical take-back will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Ana Star Center parking lot.
You must be a Rio Rancho resident and have proof of residency to drop off your materials.
The pharmaceutical take-back is intended to get medications out of reach of children and adults who might abuse the drugs or sell them for profit.
“The abuse of prescription drugs has spiked in the past five years,” Bill Harvey, executive director of the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy, said during a news conference Tuesday.
He said the number of armed robberies and thefts of prescription cargo has also increased within the past year.
Saturday's event also is intended to prevent medications from being flushed down the toilet and seeping into the community's drinking water supply.
The event is hosted by Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful, the Rio Rancho Police Department, the New Mexico Aging & Long-Term Services, the City of Rio Rancho Environmental Programs, the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy and others, according to an event flier.
