Close Watch on Halloween

By Jeff Proctor
Journal Staff Writer
Rio Rancho's police and fire departments will be busy with two very different functions on Halloween.
Police will be out with officers from the state Probation and Parole department to make sure registered sex offenders aren't violating conditions of their release by passing out candy to kids.
“As part of our Community Partnership Initiative, Rio Rancho police will patrol neighborhoods throughout the city and focus on areas where high risk sex offenders live,” department spokesman John Francis wrote in a news release. “Anyone can go online to see if a registered sex offender lives in their neighborhood.
“Simply go to www.nmsexoffender.com and enter a city, county, name or address. If you enter a city, you can see of all of the registered sex offenders and their home addresses.”
The fire department, meanwhile, will host an open house and costume contest at Station 1 on the 2800 block of Southern Boulevard.
The costume contest will feature three age groups: 3 and under, 4 to 6 and 7 to 10. Trophies will go to the top three costumes in each age group.
The event runs from noon to 3 p.m. Kids will get free treat bags and snacks and will get to watch firefighters rappel from a tower, cut apart a car with a rescue tool and spray water on a fire. A medical transport helicopter also will be at the station.
