AROUND THE STATE

SUMNER LAKE: Fishing on the lake is good for 14- to 16-inch walleye. Best trolling in deep water with a Lindy Rigs with minnows, and bottom bouncers with night crawler trailers. Silver Wally Divers and plastic minnows are also working. No reports of other species. Fishing in the stilling basin below the dam is good for stocker rainbows with PowerBait.

Lewis Hancock, park ranger

ISLETA LAKES: Fishing at both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes is very good. Both lakes were

fully stocked on Saturday and another stocking should occur today. Anglers are reporting best baits as salmon peach, garlic and white PowerBait, salmon eggs and cheese. At this writing the lakes are clear of ice; however, call for the most accurate, up-to-date

lake conditions at 505-244-8102. Fishing hours are

7  a.m.-5  p.m., seven days a week.

Carlos Trujillo, game warden

SANDIA LAKES: The lakes were recently stocked to capacity with rainbow trout ranging from 9 to 14 inches. Anglers have reported excellent catch rates, with most reporting five-fish limits. A large number of anglers have also reported rainbows 16 inches and better. Preferred baits vary day to day, so check with the lake store for the most successful baits. Sandia Lakes will be open Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Call the lake store at 505-771-5190 for more details.

JICARILLA LAKES: We believe DULCE LAKE has already or very nearly winter-killed for the season. The dissolved-oxygen readings at the surface are just below the threshold for trout survival, while those in the mid column and at the bottom are way below the threshold that can support trout. However, both MUNDO and STONE lakes have good levels of dissolved oxygen. Also, we now know that Mundo Lake and Stone Lake will be the only two lakes involved in the ice derby Jan. 21.

MUNDO is slow to fair, which is a slight upgrade from last week’s report. A few skunks were out there over the weekend, but there were also some successful anglers. One angler ventured out onto the ice armed with corn and managed to catch three fish in 15 to 30 minutes, much to the dismay of two other anglers who had been out there for more than two hours with zero action on PowerBait and salmon eggs. The biggest fish of the three was 16 inches while the other two were 10 inches.

STONE requires serious time for limited action in nearly every case. The payoff can be huge, though, and that will be what folks will gamble with when it comes to a derby strategy. I do know that there were nearly 20 people out over the weekend, though.

The ice is at least 7 inches at all of the lakes and in great shape despite the recent streak of sun.
