AROUND THE STATE
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing for northern pike is good in the main channel off the points with large soft swim bait. The habitat construction at Rex Smith Wash has created new fishable areas on the SAN JUAN RIVER with excellent fishing for trout, rainbows and brown. In bait waters, fishing is good for brown and rainbow trout using worm and flies. Shanna Reed, Navajo Lake State Park
SANDIA LAKES: Anglers are reporting consistent five-fish limits for rainbow trout. Sizes are ranging from 10 to 15 inches on average with a few larger fish reported in most creels. Most success has been reported on salmon pink PowerBait, salmon eggs, and flies such as Copper Johns and other “emergers.” Water temperatures have been ideal and shoreline access is very good, with no ice problems. Jason Wiebenga, senior biologist
ISLETA LAKES: Fishing at both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes has been very good with several full stockings of trout having taken place. At this writing both lakes are free of ice; however, call for the most current lake conditions. Best baits reported have been PowerBaits; salmon peach, nymph, garlic and corn flavors, salmon eggs and purple pistol Petes. Fishing hours are 7 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week. Carlos Trujillo, game warden
JICARILLA LAKES: The sixth annual Jicarilla Ice Derby will be held Saturday. Both MUNDO and STONE lakes will be open for the derby. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the pullout overlooking Mundo Lake just off of the J-8 Road. The current forecast is calling for a possibility of precipitation, so come prepared for anything. Call 575-759-3255 with any questions. Kevin Terry, fisheries biologist
