Ron West, hired recently by new Lobos football coach Bob Davie as his defensive coordinator, is leaving to take a job as co-defensive coordinator at Arizona State.
West worked for Todd Graham, the new ASU head coach, at Tulsa in 2009. It’s believed the move involves a healthy pay raise.
“Over the weekend, Ron received an offer from Arizona State and accepted it,” Davie said in a UNM news release. “I’m disappointed, but I certainly understand the business aspect of this profession. Coach West made a decision he felt was best for his family, and we wish him the best of luck in the future.”
No decision has been made on a replacement for West, according to the release.
“While this is a setback, we obviously have plenty of time before the start of spring football to finalize our staff,” Davie said.
