AROUND THE STATE
ISLETA LAKES: Fishing is excellent in both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes. Best reports for trout have been on the following baits: Chartreuse, Nymph, Salmon Peach PowerBaits, chartreuse pistol pete lure, salmon eggs and worms. Both lakes were stocked on Jan. 31 and will be fully stocked again today. Both lakes have been clear of freezing; however, call 505-244-8102 for the most up-to-date lake conditions. Isleta Lakes will be closed Friday, but will reopen Saturday at 8 a.m. Michelle J. Keryte, manager
TINGLEY BEACH: Trout fishing in the Children’s and Central ponds has been great. Game & Fish is stocking these ponds weekly with 2,400 rainbow trout. Salmon eggs are working well, but most anglers walk out with their bag limit of four trout within a few hours, regardless of what they’re using. Fly-fishing anglers in the South/Catch and Release Pond are reporting mixed results, but best luck when using wet flies. Rebecca Houtman, curator
JICARILLA LAKES: The lakes are sitting under 12 inches of good ice. Fishing pressure has been low, but some action was reported at both STONE and MUNDO lakes this week. The forecast is mixed right now, calling for partly cloudy to possible snow showers through the weekend. Stone Lake produced several nice rainbows up to 20 inches this weekend. Anglers were also getting bites and several hook ups, with lost fish in the mix. Mundo Lake continues to be pretty slow. A few locals have been out there with mixed results. Bluegill and bass have been hitting on the east side of the lake and are probably biting on the south end as well. If you find a pod of bluegill, you should be able to catch quite a few. The trout fishing has been slow and the average size (10 inches) is below what we want to see. If you are in Albuquerque this weekend, please stop by our booth at Bob Gerding’s Outdoor show. Let’s talk fish! Kevin Terry, fisheries biologist
NOTES from GAME & FISH: Ice fishing has been fair for trout at Lake Maloya. Try PowerBait, dough bait and salmon eggs.
Cold, windy weather has kept most anglers away from STORRIE LAKE. The lake is ice-free and a few trout have been caught on yellow PowerBait. The lake was stocked with 40,000 3 1/2-inch trout last week.
At ABIQUIÚ LAKE, fishing is slow for all species. A few walleye have been caught on live minnows.
Fishing on the CHAMA RIVER below Cooper’s lodge is fair with a few browns being taken on woolly buggers and Panther Martins. The water is running at 80 cfs.
At QUEMADO LAKE, fishing pressure has been light due to unsafe ice.
Fishing at the METRO DRAINAGES is good for trout on spinners, corn and salmon eggs.
BLUEWATER LAKE is mostly frozen with 10-12 inches of ice. Fishing is fair for trout using Power Bait. Fishing for muskies is fair on rubber jigs.
LAKE ROBERTS was stocked with 4,233 11-inch trout last week.
