AROUND THE STATE
SHADY LAKES: Our hours are Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. We will also be open on Presidents Day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The trout in the Easy Catch Pond are averaging about 12 inches, with best success on night crawlers and salmon eggs. The Big Trout Pond is averaging 17 inches. The biggest ones have been caught on night crawlers, a curly-tail grub, salmon eggs, a stone fly, white PowerBait mixed with trout chow, and even a bass jig. Jan Phillips, director
ISLETA LAKES: Fishing has been excellent in both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes. Bag limits have been reported frequently, and best baits reported have been Chartreuse, Garlic, Nymph and White PowerBaits, salmon eggs and green night crawlers. Both lakes have been fully stocked with rainbow trout. Best time is early morning. Fishing hours are 7 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week. Carlos Trujillo, game warden
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing for northern pike is good in the main channel off the points using large soft swim bait and Rapalla crank bait, especially green and orange. With colder weather, fishing has slowed on the SAN JUAN RIVER quality waters, but still seeing good action on the San Juan worm in brown or tan, red larva, orange larva and black zebra midges. There has been some dry-fly action on midge clusters like the Griffith gnat. On the bait waters, fishing is good for brown and rainbow trout using worms and flies. Shanna Reed, marine enforcement officer
SANDIA LAKES: Fishing remains excellent for rainbow trout, with most anglers reporting five-fish limits. Sizes are ranging from 10 to 16 inches, with reports of larger fish in the 18- to 20-inch range not uncommon. The lakes will be stocked to full capacity today for more excellent fishing over the long weekend, and we will be open Monday. Jason Wiebenga, Wildcat Environmental Services
NOTES from GAME & FISH: Fishing in the open water of the south end of QUEMADO LAKE has been pretty good this past week. A 24-inch and a 22-inch trout were caught on PowerBait. The fish were good and fat. PowerBait seems to be the way to go. The ice is moving toward the dam and in some spots has pushed up on the bank. Ice is thin enough to break easily.
With the warm weather from last week, the ice at BLUEWATER LAKE is 8 inches thick in the center with some water showing on the sides. Fishing pressure has slowed quite a bit, with a few trout being caught on PowerBait. Very few fishermen are reporting catching muskies.
At MANZANO LAKE, fishing has been good using salmon eggs and PowerBait.
