CATCHES OF THE WEEK

At Shady Lakes, Jordan Madrid, 15, of Albuquerque caught a 20 3/4-inch rainbow with a green jig Saturday. … Dante Rossetti, 11, of Albuquerque caught a 21 1/2-inch rainbow weighing 4 1/2 pounds with a red spoon Monday.

AROUND THE STATE

JICARILLA LAKES: The ice sheet is currently 15 inches thick at STONE LAKE and assumed the same at MUNDO LAKE. The wet snow from last week’s storm was quickly incorporated into the ice sheet during recent clear, cold nights. The weather outlook is good through the weekend this week. Stone Lake has received all of the attention recently, and Mundo Lake remains untracked. Oxygen levels are hanging on at Stone and the fish caught are still fighting well. Kevin Terry, fisheries biologist

SHADY LAKES: The trout have been biting actively. Trout in the Easy Catch Pond are averaging about 12 inches, with best success on night crawlers and salmon eggs. The Big Trout Pond is averaging 17 inches, with the two biggest caught on a green jig and the red spoon. The bass activity has been nice for this colder time of year, with best success being mini macs and spinner baits with a slow retrieval. The maximum number reported caught and released was two. Bluegill and catfish aren’t awake yet. Shady Lakes is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. In March, Shady Lakes will open again on a daily basis. Jan Phillips, director

ISLETA LAKES: Fishing has been very good for trout on both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes. Bag limits have been reported using the following baits; white, rainbow, garlic and salmon peach PowerBait, salmon eggs and green night crawlers. A few channel catfish have also been reported caught using worms. Both lakes have been free and clear of ice. Fishing hours are still 7 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week. For more lake information call the convenience store at 505-244-8102. Carlos Trujillo, game warden

NOTES from GAME & FISH: EAGLE NEST LAKE has 15 to 19 inches of ice. Fishing is good for yellow perch and rainbows caught with PowerBait and jigs with worms.

Ice is 16 inches thick at LAKE MALOYA. Fishing is good with PowerBait, dough bait and salmon eggs catching 9- to 12-inch rainbow trout. Fishing is closed at LAKE ALICE due to thin ice.

Fishing on the RED RIVER is slow to fair below the hatchery, but water is clear and a few stocker rainbows have been caught on bead-head nymphs.

At EL VADO LAKE, the main campground is closed and most of the shoreline is frozen over, making it tough to fish. The ice is too thin for ice fishing.

Fishing is slow at NAVAJO LAKE, but a few brown trout have been caught while trolling the main channel with Rapalas at about 20 to 30 feet. A few smallmouth bass have been caught.

Fishing good at the METRO DRAINAGES for trout on spinners, corn and salmon eggs.

Ice around the edges at BLUEWATER LAKE is starting to melt, with spring runoff starting to come in from Bluewater Creek. The center of the lake still has about 8 inches of ice. Fishing for trout is fair using PowerBait. A few muskies are also being caught on jigs.

Fishing in the children’s and central ponds at TINGLEY BEACH has been great. The ponds are being stocked weekly with 2,400 rainbow trout. Most people are catching their limit within a few hours regardless of bait. Homemade baits and cheesy garlic PowerBait are catching the most. Fly fishing in the catch and release pond is hit and miss using wet flies.

Fishing in the open water of the south end of QUEMADO LAKE has been good. An additional 4,726 rainbow trout were stocked last week. PowerBait seems to be the way to go.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE was stocked recently. Try PowerBait or salmon eggs.

Fishing for rainbow trout at ESCONDIDA LAKE is good with PowerBait and salmon eggs.

Fishing on the RIO GRANDE has been fair between Elephant Butte and Caballo for stocked triploid rainbow trout.

At BEAR CANYON LAKE, fishing for trout is fair with bright-colored PowerBait. Other species are slow.
