Members Can Get Free Tickets for Annual Banquet
Since its inception in 1973, the Albuquerque/New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame has inducted 93 men, 14 women, one team and one family.
Some inductees, of course, are deceased. Others have lost contact with the Hall of Fame board, or vice versa.
As a result, says board President Kenny Barreras, “Outside of the regulars, very few (previous inductees) attend.”

Barreras and the board would like to change that, starting with Tuesday’s 39th annual banquet at the Marriott Pyramid. Past inductees are invited to pick up complimentary tickets today or Monday at the New Mexico Activities Association offices, 6600 Palomas NE.
This year’s inductees are:
♦ Coaches L.G. and Cooper Henderson, who built a high school football dynasty at Artesia;
♦ The late John Lomasney, who coached the Gallup High School girls basketball team to four state titles and two runner-up finishes;
♦ Guy Wimberly, a former UNM golf All-American and a member of the PGA Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame’s first induction class consisted of Bobby Unser, Roy Johnson and F.M. “Tony” Wilson in 1974.
The first woman to be inducted was New Mexico tennis legend Nancy Neeld in 1978.
In 1984, the Hall of Fame broke new ground by inducting an entire team: the 1934 UNM football squad that went 8-1 and won the Border Conference title.
In 1999, the Henrys, the unofficial first family of New Mexico track and field, were inducted as a group.
