Utes Shut Down UNM Softball
Utah’s Generra Neilson handcuffed No. 24-ranked New Mexico, allowing one hit and striking out 10 Sunday, as the Utes beat UNM 6-1 in the Lobo Invitational.
New Mexico (17-3), went 4-1 in the tournament. Utah is 15-3.
Shenise Cox smashed a solo homer, which cleared the bleachers in left field in the first inning, to give UNM a 1-0 lead.
“I’ve hit some pretty far in practice, but that was probably the furthest I’ve hit one in a game,” Cox said.
But Neilson (10-0) shut down the Lobos from there.
“The Utah pitcher was definitely effective,” Lobo coach Erica Beach said. “She moves the ball and hits her spots. We give her a lot of credit.”
UNM starter Kaela DeBroeck (10-1) gave up six runs and seven hits.
The Lobos’ next game is Friday, 5 p.m. at Texas Tech.
