CATCHES OF THE WEEK
Daniel Hayden of Albuquerque caught and released a 22-inch, 5.2-pound largemouth bass with blue creature bait on Sunday at Shady Lakes. Jackson Cordova, 9, of Albuquerque caught a 21-inch, 3 1/2-pound trout caught with fireballs Sunday at Shady Lakes.
AROUND THE STATE
SHADY LAKES: Shady Lakes is now open every day. The trout continue to bite actively, especially in the Easy Catch Pond, with an average of 12 inches. The best success in this pond is with night crawlers and salmon eggs. The Big Trout Pond is averaging 17 inches with a variety of baits this week (salmon eggs/worms/trout lures). The bass activity is waking up. The highest number of bass reported caught and released over the weekend was five. Best success reported for this cooler time of year has been with crankbait, mini macs and spinner baits with a slow retrieval. Bluegill and catfish action hasn’t begun yet. Jan Phillips, director
ISLETA LAKES: Fishing at both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes is very good. Fishing best during morning and tapers down as the day warms. Fishing with baits has been best, and the successful baits are Nymph, Sherbet and White PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs. Some channel catfish have been reported caught using chicken liver and worms. SAN ILDEFONSO: Fishing has been good for 12- to 15-inch rainbows. They are biting on corn, salmon eggs and PowerBait. Several limits have been caught. Fishing is good with Pistol Petes in the early morning and later in the day. Ray Flores, tribal ranger
NOTES from GAME & FISH: At CONCHAS LAKE, fishing for walleye is good at about 50 to 60 feet with minnows. Water temp is 49 degrees.
EAGLE NEST LAKE has 15 inches of ice with windy conditions. Fishing is good for yellow perch and rainbows with PowerBait and worms. Pike are being caught with mealworms.
Fishing on the RED RIVER is good below the hatchery using dry flies on cloudy days.
At UTE LAKE, fishing for walleye is fair at 20-25 feet using minnows. Water temperature is 46 degrees. White bass still slow.
Fishing at TINGLEY BEACH’S central and kid’s ponds has been great, with most anglers catching their limit of four trout within a few hours using salmon eggs. Fishing for catfish is reported slow at this time. The catch and release pond has been fair to good using wet flies.
METRO DRAINAGES are clear and fishing well using salmon eggs and an assortment of spinners. Irrigation season started March 1, so fishing may slow as the drains become murky.
Fishing at NAVAJO LAKE is fair to good, with lots of fishermen saying that the trout are biting well. The lake was stocked with kokanee salmon Feb. 27.
Fishing is reported as fair to good using all types of baits below the SAN ANTONIO fishing access.
On the SAN JUAN RIVER, fishing is fair to good using size 24 to 26 Krystal flash midges.
