Offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse’s scheme is as multiple as advertised, Lobos football coach Bob Davie said after Saturday’s spring-practice session, and the UNM defense is having trouble doing the math.

That’s to be expected, Davie said, and it’s OK — for now.

Last season, DeBesse was the offensive coordinator at Sam Houston State. The Bearkats lit up the Lobos for 48 points and 547 yards en route to a victory in overtime. Sam Houston went on to a 14-1 record and a runner-up finish in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision.

DeBesse’s offense at UNM won’t be a clone of the option attack he ran out of the pistol formation at Sam Houston State.

Identical, no; similar, yes.

The Lobos’ 3-4 defense, Davie said, isn’t a perfect match for UNM’s offense — and isn’t intended to be, since the Lobos likely won’t face anything like DeBesse’s scheme next fall.

“Schematically, (the defense) is at a disadvantage,” Davie said.

The offense made some big plays during Saturday’s practice, but Davie said it’s too soon to be concerned about the defense.

“There were some busts and things (on defense),” he said, “but rather than worry about all the results, it’s still just trying to develop individual guys.”

A NEW LOBO: Offensive line coach Jason Lenzmeier’s wife, Kelsey, gave birth to the couple’s first child last week.

Since Brooks Lenzmeier was considerate enough to come into the world on a day the Lobos weren’t scheduled to practice, his dad didn’t miss a workout.

A FORMER LOBO: Redshirt freshman Zach Boerboom has left the program. “It looks like he’s done playing college football altogether,” Davie said.

Boerboom, from Cape Girardeau, Mo., came to UNM as a tight end but was listed as a center on the 2012 roster.

TURNER’S A RAM: Former Lobos offensive lineman Robert Turner (2003-06) has signed a free-agent contract with the St. Louis Rams. Turner played for the New York Jets, mostly as a backup, the past five seasons.

DAVIE AND CALIPARI: Davie and Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari are graduates of Moon Area High School in Moon Township, Pa. Davie graduated in 1972, Calipari in ’78, but Davie said he remembers his fellow Moon Area grad.

“(Calipari) was a real gym rat,” he said.
