Monday: For the second straight game, the Isotopes dug themselves a big hole and could not overcome it as they lost to the Iowa Cubs 10-6 on a frigid night in Des Moines.
Two-run homers by Anthony Rizzo and pitcher Travis Wood helped the Cubs take an 8-0 lead in the third inning.
Two-run doubles by Scott Van Slyke and Trent Oeltjen helped keep the Isotopes interested, but were not nearly enough.
Wood (1-0) earned the victory for Iowa, while Isotopes starter John Ely (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs, seven of them earned, on 10 hits in just three innings.
The ’Topes, who lost 17-11 at Omaha on Sunday, have lost three in a row.
