Mine That Bird’s story will hit the big screen.

The New Mexico horse is best known for stunning the racing world by winning the Kentucky Derby at 50-1 odds in 2009.

The film — titled “50 to 1” — will be produced and directed by Jim Wilson. He produced “Dances With Wolves,” “Swing Vote” and “Wyatt Earp.” The latter two movies were filmed in New Mexico.

“It is always a pleasure to return to New Mexico to make a film,” Wilson said. “I produced ‘Wyatt Earp’ almost 20 years ago, then came back to make ‘Swing Vote.’ … On our new film we are hopscotching across the state, from Sunland Park to Las Cruces to Albuquerque.”

Filming will begin production in early September. Crews will set up in and around Las Cruces, Sunland Park, Edgewood, Tijeras, Corrales, Bernalillo, Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Production manager Karen Koch said: “The 99 percent New Mexican crew is proud to tell this homegrown story and feature so positively the southern part of our state.”
