The UNM Lobos will not be squaring off against old coaching nemesis Rick Majerus this season after all.
The head coach of the St. Louis University Billikens will be taking a leave of absence to deal with a heart-related health concern. That leaves assistant coach Jim Crews in charge for the season, including the Dec. 31 game in which the Lobos will travel to St. Louis to play the Billikens.
“Rick is in a California hospital undergoing evaluation and treatment for an ongoing heart condition,” Chris Mays, St. Louis athletic director, said in a statement posted on the school’s athletics web site. “His health is the most important issue right now, and our hope is for full and complete recovery.”
Lobos fans likely remember Majerus most from his time as the head coach of the Utah Utes where he was a heated hoops rival of the UNM program.
