Albuquerque-based mixed martial arts fighter Jon Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion, has a new opponent for his Sept. 22 title defense in Toronto. It’s veteran Vitor Belfort, who replaces Lyoto Machida after Machida declined to take the bout.
MMA fans can hope this is the last change in a dizzying 24 hours that saw UFC President Dana White announce the cancellation of the scheduled UFC 151 on Sept. 1. Jones was to have defended against Dan Henderson, but Henderson withdrew with an injury. Jones and his coach, Greg Jackson of Albuquerque’s Jackson-Winkeljohn Mixed Martial Arts, then drew White’s ire by refusing to fight replacement opponent Chael Sonnen on such short notice.
White vociferously and profanely blamed Jones and Jackson for the cancellation. Jackson pointed out, a bit more calmly, that only the promoter can cancel a fight card.
And on we go.
