Running back Kasey Carrier was a second-team selection on the All-Mountain West football team, released today (Tuesday, Dec. 4).
Nine Lobos received honorable mention: kicker Justus Adams, linebacker Dallas Bollema, offensive guard LaMar Bratton, kick returner Chase Clayton, center Dillon Farrell, defensive end Jacori Greer, offensive tackle Darryl Johnson, safety Matt Raymer and punter Ben Skaer.
San Diego State coach Rocky Long, who was the head coach at UNM from 1998-2008, was named Coach of the Year for taking the Aztecs to a 9-3 record. San Diego State enters is Poinsettia Bowl game against Brigham Young riding a seven-game winning streak that includes a trophy victory over Boise State.
At midseason, first-year UNM coach Bob Davie looked like the runaway choice for Coach of the Year. But the Lobos lost their final six games in finishing 4-9.
I voted for Long and in fact voted for all the individual honorees: Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr (offensive Player of the Year, Fresno State safety Phillip Thomas (Defensive Player of the Year), Hawaii kick returner Mike Edwards (Special Teams) and Fresno State wide receiver Davante Adams (Freshman of the Year).
Carrier had a first team-worthy season, setting a UNM single-season rushing record with 1,469 yards. But the Mountain West was loaded with terrific running backs, five of whom finished in the top 20 nationally.
Nevada’s Stefphon Jefferson and Fresno State’s Robbie Rouse were the first-team running backs; San Diego State’s Adam Muema joined Carrier on the second team.
