ARLINGTON, Texas – Kevin Butler scored 18 points and Drew Charles added 12 to lead Texas-Arlington to a 68-47 victory against New Mexico State on Saturday.

For the first time in Marvin Menzies’ six years as Aggies coach, New Mexico State (6-7) lost its first Western Athletic Conference game.

The 47-point total is the lowest for an Aggie team in the Menzies era. It’s also the lowest since a 51-37 loss at New Orleans on Feb. 12, 2004. And Menzies didn’t mince words after the game, calling it a “horrendous effort.”

“They just kicked our butts from tipoff to the buzzer,” said Menzies. “I’m upset because of our lackluster effort (in) answering the call. We laid an egg. It’s amazing to sit through 40 minutes of embarrassment. … The reality is we were horrible tonight.”

UT-Arlington (6-3, 1-0), after arriving from the Southland Conference, departs for the Sun Belt in 2013.

Daniel Mullings had 21 points, and Sim Bhullar had 14 points and five blocks for NMSU (6-7, 0-1). But the rest of the Aggies were a miserable 4-of-31 from the field.

A 17-5 run over an 8:32 stretch in the second half gave the Mavericks permanent control, a 54-32 cushion with 10:33 remaining.

UT-ARLINGTON 62, NMSU WOMEN 59: In Las Cruces, freshman Abby Scott scored a season-high 18 points, but the Aggies shot only 26 percent from the field in the second half and lost their WAC opener. Stefanie Gilbreath had 15 points and 10 rebounds for NMSU, but she was only 4-of-18 from the field.
