Albuquerque’s Holly Holm will fight on the Feb. 28 Bellator MMA card at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, her promoter, Lenny Fresquez announced.
Regarding the proposed boxing showdown between Holm and Norway’s Cecilia Braekhus, Fresquez said in a news release he has broken off negotiations because of Braekhus’ decision to fight Mia St. John in Denmark on April 13.
Fresquez said he is awaiting a definitive response from the World Boxing Council. The WBC has ordered a fight between Holm and Braekhus for the latter’s WBC welterweight title.
The WBC has said it will conduct a purse bid for such a fight if Fresquez and Sauerland Event, Braekhus’ promotional firm, cannot reach agreement for the fight.
Fresquez has said the fight, by rule, must occur within 90 days of the purse bid. Braekhus’ April fight against St. John is an obvious complication in that regard.
Holm, 31-2-3 as a boxer, is 2-0 as an MMA fighter. She trains at Albuquerque’s Jackson Mixed Martial Arts.
