AROUND THE STATE
SANDIA LAKES: Anglers are reporting excellent catch rates with five fish limits very common. The lakes received another full load of fish on Saturday and weekly stockings will continue through the remainder of the trout season. Jason Wiebenga, Wildcat Environmental Services
ISLETA LAKES: Fishing has been very good at both SUNRISE and TURTLE Lakes. Both lakes were recently fully stocked with rainbow trout. Anglers are reporting consistent bag limits of five fish each. Best baits being reported are peach salmon, garlic, garlic glitter and purple nymph PowerBaits and corn. The use of pistol Pete’s is also very good, along with fly fishing using olive green or black woolly buggers. Catfish activity is also increasing. Best baits for the catfish are chicken liver and worms. Curtis Thompson, Isleta Lakes & RV Park
SHADY LAKES: Shady Lakes is open daily now. We will restock today in preparation for next week’s APS Spring Break with 2,000 pounds of trout, 500 pounds going into the Big Trout Pond. The Easy Catch Trout Pond’s size average is 12 inches while the Big Trout are 16 to 18 inches on average with some 20-inch fish added for enticement. Bass activity is beginning to fire up with reports of up to 10 caught in a day. Average reported catches running 4 to 7 largemouth bass each. Baits are crank baits and swim fish plastics with a shallow dive out in the open water. This is a premium time of year for this as the water lilies and aquatic grasses haven’t started up yet. Biggest bass reported was 2 pounds with smaller bass in the 10- to 11-inch range the running average. The Bluegill have not risen up to be spotted yet, although one seasoned Bluegill Wizard reported catching (and releasing) five with a fly rod. Jan Phillips director
