  • HOW APPROPRIATE that an exhibit on the Titanic appears in Albuquerque the same time as the Lobos lose. Both suffered from a serious design flaw. The Titanic didn’t have enough life boats and the Lobos couldn’t shoot the ball. Both flaws resulted in an unexpected loss with disastrous consequences for their fans and the ship going down. — Bud in Albuquerque
  • COME ON. “Upset”, “Heartbreaking loss”–More Journal BS. People who are objective have long recognized that the UNM men’s basketball team, year after year, is made up of players with little or no basketball skills who want to play with the “big boys.” Their fate in the NCAA Tournament, if they should be lucky enough to get there, is always the same–one and done usually, never the “Sweet 16.”–and so highly predictable. Predictable to all but the Journal Sports Dept staff who refuse to tell the awful truth. Instead, they are obsessed with meaningless garbage and hype, e.g., ratings, a string of victories over “cupcakes”, champions of a mediocre conference in the mountains, new recruits that they liken to a second Larry Bird, mothers predicting Final Four, etc. Oh well–same old story next year. — Wally Schulz
  • MEMO TO STEVE ALFORD: “… those who exalt themselves will be humbled…”. (Matthew 23:12) Steve, you are an outstanding coach, that is obvious. But you have put so much pressure on these young players through your constant bragging to the media about how good we are, how low our RPI is, how good our record on the road is, our great defense, how we play in the #1 or #2 conference in the country, etc., it was no wonder that we lost. You have put this team up on such a high pedestal, they had no where to go but down. Take the advice of someone who has been around awhile, “Let your coaching and the play of your team speak for themselves.” Remember there is another half to this passage, …”and the humbled will be exalted.” — Randy S., Albuquerque
  • OH WELL. We’ll always have Las Vegas. — Lobo Fan for Life
  • THE HARVARD CRIMSON has now won an NCAA tournament game. Hey, didn’t the Washington Generals win once? — Timmy
  • DID ANYONE RECORD the UNM/Harvard game on a DVR? Please make copies and send it to everybody who still wonders why the MWC does not get any “respect” in the polls or tournament seedings. After watching the game in its entirety all of you begging for “respect” will be happy with a simple NIT invite. — Lawrence-Albuquerque
  • MOUNTAIN WEST Conference Player of the Year — W H A T E V E R!!!!! — Donna in Albuquerque
  • HOW SAD THAT comes Big Dance Time and we always find a way to shoot ourselves in the foot. With the big bucks Alford’s making, why not try the full court press in the second half, instead of waiting until there’s 40 seconds left in the game. It worked. Too bad only Alex Kirk showed up for the game. Again yada, yada, yada, by the NM press and media and the same old results! — MAP
  • THE LOBOS WERE supposed to give Harvard serious matchup problems, but it was actually the other way around. How many open/uncontested three-point shots did it take for the Lobo coaching staff to realize that we needed to go smaller in order to guard at the three-point line? Apparently it took 18 open/uncontested three-point shots (Harvard’s total) and they still didn’t get it. I think this team really missed Demetrius Walker. I thought from the beginning of the season that he was the key piece of the puzzle. Sure hope he comes back strong next year. — Corrales Guy
  • I GUESS WE Lobo fans got ahead of ourselves. The first round NCAA loss was a huge disappointment, but at 29-6, it was a very good season, just not the great season we were anticipating. Hopefully over the offseason the Lobos can work on their shooting woes. Assuming no defections, we lose no one from the starting five, and have what sounds like a very capable crop of recruits coming in next year. Say all you want about an untimely announcement of Steve Alford’s contract, but I just don’t buy the notion that had any impact on Thursday’s game. Continued mediocre shooting just caught up with us. — Bob, UNM Area
  • I KNOW, I KNOW, maybe things would be different if Moses Malone would have been signed, or if we had someone to guard (Fullerton’s) Kevin Heenan, or if Ellenberger hadn’t have thrown the Fullerton game, or if the refs hadn’t of been cheating for BYU all those times, or if (insert your litany of reasons right here lobo apologists). — Mike Armijo, UNM BA, UNM MA, New Mexico birth certificate
  • LOBOS LOSE game one, and it rains hell on sportsspeakup. In the end, out of a field of 68 teams, only one team will win the big one, 67 teams come home. They had a great year, and may be even better next year. Lets cheer on sister school Colorado state to go all the way. — Vince Guillen
  • THE WALLFLOWER Lobos yet again danced with two left feet. — Dave – Albuquerque
  • TEXAS SCHOOLS WERE 6-1 in bowl games with the lose by 1 point. The roundball state of NM had no bowl qualifier and went 0-2 in the roundball tournament. Texans know the shape of their ball — does NM? — John – Lone Star
  • IN MY OPINION, the one thing this Lobo team has not figured out is how to put away inferior teams early in the game, never giving them a chance or the option to think that they can actually play with us or even (Heaven help us) win. As a result, we played with fire all season against teams like Nevada and Fresno St. and got burned by South Dakota State, Air Force and now Harvard. Charles Barkley said it best at halftime: when you are the superior, higher seeded team you have to come out with energy, enthusiasm and attitude. Instead, we started the game one for twelve. — Dennis
  • THESE LOBOS are one of the most inconsistent teams in the country, and the whole country was able to watch it unfold in a week. Last week you saw a red hot Lobo team that could have made a Sweet 16 run. This week we saw a Lobo team that does not know how to score, and does not now how to play perimeter defense. The NCAA’s is all about consistency, and that should be the number one thing on Coach Alford’s summer plan with these guys. Followed by Alex and Cameron working on the inside to shoot 70% or better, like a true big man. 30% on the inside will not work … ever. — nike.dog
  • LOBOS DIDN’T CHOKE. Let’s not fault the young men. It was the vast media coverage, the Alumni high rollers, the die hard fans, and the $1,884,200.04 coach is getting. — Jjc
  • CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Alford and the Lobos for another great year! The dance is the dance. What can you say? It’s just a tough tournament. There is always next year … with Bryce at the 2 guard! — Edogg, Albuquerque
  • I KNOW IT HURTS now Lobo fans, but let’s look at what lies ahead for the program. All of the starters from a 29-6 season and a No. 10 national ranking will be back. The only thing lacking on this season’s team was a shooter. Next season with Bryce Alford’s phenomenal shooting talent, including 3-point range, the Lobos should have all the ingredients to go deep into the NCAA Tournament. The best is yet to come for Lobo Nation and I can hardly wait. — Will
  • JUST KEEP REPEATING the mantra: “There is always next year.” Until then the team goes back to being “they” instead of “we”. — lily
  • LOBOS WERE DOOMED at the mention of Final Four last Sunday. — jwd – abq
  • THE GAME AGAINST Harvard was a disappointment, I agree, however I am a LOBO fan thru and thru. … This is the time that we need to stand behind our Lobos, and not be so quick to find fault when they lose. Congratulations to the LOBOS and a fantastic season!!! One that we will never forget. Until next year… — Liz Sandoval, Nambe

Great day for New Mex basketball. Neither Aggies nor Lobos show up. Pitiful.

Chris Tomasson @christomasson

New Mexico still hasn’t been to the Sweet Sixteen since 1974. Never won two games to get there. One was needed then.
