UPDATE: Click here for an updated article as published in Wednesday’s Journal.

New Mexico junior guard Tony Snell on Tuesday announced he will make himself eligible for the NBA Draft, but will not hire an agent meaning he has until April 16 to change his mind and return to the Lobos.

“Tony has decided to test the interest level of the NBA,” UNM head coach Steve Alford said. “We are helping him to gather that information. He has until April 16 to make his decision.”

Snell averaged 12.5 points per game for UNM this season and hit a team-high 64 3-pointers. The 6-7 swingman made most noise nationally during the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas when he was named MVP.

By not hiring an agent, Snell does not lose his amateur status and can gather feedback from NBA scouts about his pro prospects before making his final decision.
