CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Mikey Montoya of Clayton caught a 24-inch, 6-pound walleye on March 21 at Clayton Lake. He was using a spinner.

Bob Lechel of Los Alamos caught and released a 4.17-pound largemouth bass at Ute Lake on March 21. He was flipping a beaver. The same day, Mark Adams of Edgewood caught and released a 4.06-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a jerk bait.

Maya Benavidez, 8, caught a 14 1/2-inch rainbow trout while fishing at the Children’s Pond at Tingley Beach on Saturday. She was using PowerBait.

Josh Gonzales, 6, of Los Lunas, caught a 13-inch crappie at Santa Rosa Lake on Saturday. He was using a worm. Also Saturday, Rosalyn Rael, 5, of Los Lunas, caught an 18 1/2-inch walleye. She was using a worm.

Justin Lusby of Las Cruces caught a 4-pound largemouth bass at Elephant Butte Lake on Saturday. He was using a lipless crank bait.

AROUND THE STATE

ISLETA LAKES: A full stocking will take place for both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes in preparation of the Easter weekend. Both lakes have been doing well and bag limits have been reported. Best baits are PowerBaits, worms and salmon eggs. Catfish activity is increasing with the warming temperatures. Best baits for catfish have been garlic chicken liver and worms. SANDIA LAKES: Beginning Monday, the lakes will be open seven days a week. Also, join us for our Easter Egg Hunt at 1 p.m. Sunday. The lakes will be stocked today and will be stocked again over the weekend. Jason Wiebenga, senior biologist

NOTES from GAME & FISH: Water flow on the SAN JUAN RIVER below Navajo Lake as of Monday 500 cfs. Fishing in the quality water section was fair to good using zebra midges, grey RS2s, WD40s, small bead-head pheasant tails, Griffith’s gnats and olive leeches. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using salmon eggs, Panther Martin spinners, night crawlers, jerk baits and wooly buggers.

Trout fishing at TINGLEY BEACH’S the Children’s Pond and the Central Pond was very good using Pistol Petes, Panther Martins, PowerBait, salmon eggs, homemade dough baits and worms. Fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was fair using egg patterns, zebra midges, RS2s and leeches.

Trout fishing at MONASTARY LAKE was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and Panther Martins.

MORPHY LAKE opens Monday. There will be no boating at this time due to low water levels but bank fishing should be great.

Water flow on the PECOS RIVER near the town of Pecos was 16 cfs. Trout fishing was good using copper John Barrs, prince nymphs and salmon eggs.

As of Monday morning, about 80 percent of EAGLE NEST LAKE was still iced over but there was some open water to fish from the bank.

The latest cold spell created a thin layer of ice on STORRIE LAKE in the early morning hours but there has been plenty of open water to fish by late morning each day. Fishing was slow for all species.

Fishing at UTE LAKE was fair using jerk baits, swim baits and jig and grub combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing was slow for black bass but there were a few taken on jigs, jerk baits and crank baits.

The ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS were stocked with trout again this past week.

At BLUEWATER LAKE, fishing was slow to fair trolling crank baits for tiger muskie. Fishing for trout and catfish was slow.

The surface water temp at ELEPHANT BUTTE was in the high 40s over the weekend and fishing slowed for all species.

At NAVAJO LAKE, fishing was slow to fair using jerk bait, swim baits and crank baits for northern pike. The best bass reports came from anglers fishing the San Juan arm.
