The New Mexico Stars report that quarterback KJ Black is showing signs of improvement after being knocked out of Saturday’s Lone Star Football League game in Amarillo with a right knee injury.
“It appears the swelling and the pain have gone down, and there are no immediate tears,” Jayson Peña, the team’s player personnel director, said Tuesday afternoon. “All are good signs, but he was still going to get a formal MRI later today.”
Black, who was the league’s Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in New Mexico’s season-opening 60-42 road victory against San Angelo, was hurt late in the second quarter of the Stars’ 62-34 loss to the host Venom. He was attempting to make a tackle after throwing an interception.

“He was moving laterally and his knee just kind of buckled,” Peña said. “He wasn’t hit by the guy making the return but the blocker ahead of him.”
Peña said Black, who was able to exit the field without assistance, is walking now “with no help whatsoever.”
In 2009, Black tore the ACL in his left knee before his senior season at Prairie View A&M.
Peña said if Black isn’t able to start the team’s home opener at the Santa Ana Star Center on April 6 against Laredo, backup Matt Caward likely would play. Caward is coming off injured reserve after injuring his right (passing) elbow in training camp. LONE STAR FOOTBALL
