UNM softball team swept by Aztecs

SAN DIEGO — The University of New Mexico lost 1-0 to Mountain West foe San Diego State on Saturday afternoon, giving the host Aztecs the three-game series sweep over the Lobos (16-23, 0-3).

UNM freshman Lauren Soles threw the entire game and allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out two. The run she allowed was the lone earned tally San Diego State (22-13, 3-0) got all weekend.

But the Lobos managed only one run through the three games. On Saturday, UNM had six hits and left 10 runners stranded.

PITTSBURGH — Despite losing their captain, the Pittsburgh Penguins found a way to finish the month unbeaten.

Pittsburgh welcomed star forward Jarome Iginla to the lineup, but lost Sidney Crosby early in the first period after he was hit in the mouth with a puck.

Still, the Penguins managed to overcome the injury to Crosby on Saturday for their 15th straight victory as Matt Cooke and James Neal scored third-period goals during a 2-0 victory against the New York Islanders.

Coach Dan Bylsma said Crosby lost several teeth and needed oral surgery. Bylsma said he did not know if Crosby would miss additional time.
