Saturday: Scott Van Slyke went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBIs as the ’Topes defeated the I-Cubs 8-3 in front of 7,774 fans at Isotopes Park. Albuquerque improved to 3-0 and has a chance to sweep the four-game series today.

The I-Cubs scored three early runs against Isotopes starter Blake Johnson and led 3-2 going to the bottom of the third. Van Slyke tied it with an RBI single and came home on Rusty Ryal’s double to give the ’Topes the lead after three.

Four Albuquerque relievers made the lead stand. Chris Withrow (1-0), Red Patterson, Geison Aguasviva and Josh Wall held the I-Cubs scoreless on just four hits over the final six innings. Van Slyke added a two-run single during a four-run eighth as the Isotopes broke things open.

Transactions: RHP Steve Smith, a former New Mexico Lobo, was called up from Single-A Ogden. RHP Steve Ames was placed on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation.
