Dominguez Leaving UNM Basketball

By Mark Smith
Journal Staff Writer
University of New Mexico director of basketball operations Silvey Dominguez is leaving the program at week's end to return to Colorado, the Journal has learned.
Dominguez's wife, Debora, lives in Loveland, Colo. She did not move to Albuquerque after Dominguez took the position at UNM last spring.
Dominguez came to UNM from the University of Wyoming, where he had been an assistant coach under Steve McClain the previous four seasons. McClain was fired following the 2006-07 campaign.
Dominguez didn't return phone calls from the Journal on Wednesday, but multiple sources confirmed that he told them that Friday will be his last day at New Mexico, and he doesn't have another job.
Sources also said that UNM assistant coach Craig Neal confirmed Dominguez's departure earlier this week during an AAU event in Houston.
Neal did not return messages from the Journal on Wednesday.
Dominguez, 55, is a 1977 graduate of UNM. He also graduated from Grants High.
The operations director is not an official coaching position, but Dominguez had been an assistant college coach at nine schools from 1979-2007. He served under the likes of Ernie Kent (St. Mary's, Calif.), Henry Bibby (Southern Cal), Boyd Grant (Colorado State), Reggie Minton (Air Force) and Rick Majerus (Utah). He was Majerus' top assistant in 2002-03.
Men's basketball video coordinator Trey Trotter is also leaving the program, the Journal has learned.
