TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The No. 12 New Mexico men tied for eighth Monday at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, marking the highest finish in program history.
The Lobos’ previous best was a ninth place finish in 2004, which was their last trip to the NCAA meet. Senior Jacob Kirwa of Eldoret, Kenya finished 11th — third best in UNM history — to earn All-America honors. UNM defeated five higher ranked teams, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 Portland, No. 5 BYU, No. 9 Syracuse and No. 11 Iona The 25th-ranked UNM women finished 13th — their best since an 11th place finish at the inaugural NCAA Women’s Championship meet in 1981. UNM notched its third top-15 finish in school history and finished among the top 20 (out of 31 teams) for the second straight year (18th in ’08) The Lobos defeated 12 higher ranked teams, including five in the top 15. Junior Ruth Senior of Norwich, England led the Lobos with a 46th place finish — the best by a UNM woman at the meet since 1988. Oklahoma State edged Oregon for the men’s title, while Villanova won the women’s crown.
