Even Las Cruces' incredible comeback 32-31 upset win over Mayfield on Friday night at Aggie Memorial Stadium was not enough to prevent the Trojans from clinching the District 3-5A championship.

Mayfield, Las Cruces and Oñate each finished 3-1 in the district, but the Trojans (9-1) easily won the tiebreaker between the other two based on point differential in the teams' head to head meetings.

The Knights (8-2) finished as the 3-5A runner-up, and defending state champion Las Cruces (7-3) is the league's third-place team.

All three 'Cruces schools are likely to be in the top eight in the 12-team playoff field, with probably two of them set to host first-round games next week.

Seedings for the 3A, 4A and 5A playoffs will be announced tonight. The top four in each class earn first-round byes.

In Hobbs on Friday, Clovis, which has been on a tear since losing five weeks ago at Rio Rancho, won its fifth straight game with a 30-0 win over the Eagles. The Wildcats (8-2) clinched the 4-5A title with the win.

Sandia, a definite bubble team in 5A, closed out the season with a 63-6 win at winless Santa Fe on Friday.

QB Jordan Ratliffe led the Matadors (5-5, 3-1 2-5A) and their Wildcat offense, as he ran for four of Sandia's nine touchdowns.

Carlos Mora scored on a 4-yard run and a 15-yard pass, and Drew Mathson had two TD runs.

Belen completed a 10-0 season with a 54-8 rout of visiting St. Pius on Friday. The Eagles officially nailed down the 6-4A title with the win while Volcano Vista (9-1) clinched second place with a 48-7 rout of Grants.

Belen quarterback Dylan Barba rushed for four touchdowns, and Steven Contreras rushed for two more.

Elsewhere in 4A, Del Norte (5-5) held off Moriarty 24-20 to win the 5-4A championship. It also allowed Valencia, which was idle on Friday, to clinch second place in the district.

Down south, Goddard took a 47-35 decision in the Bulldog Bowl over host Artesia. The Rockets (7-3) likely earned a top-four seed in the 4A playoffs with the win.

Same, too for Aztec. The Tigers (7-3) pounded Piedra Vista 62-21.
