An entire season of 5A soccer comes down to a doubleheader between two Northeast Heights schools.
Eldorado's boys and girls teams will face their counterparts from La Cueva in today's big-school final at the APS Soccer Complex. The girls' matchup starts at 3 p.m., and the boys go at 7. It will be the sixth time the girls have faced one another in the title match while the boys will be going head-to-head for the second time. BOYS ELDORADO 2, CIBOLA 0: The third-seeded Eagles (17-5) won their 11th straight thanks, in no small part, to the play of goalie Javier Lane in the waning moments. The Eldorado keeper smothered several Cibola scoring opportunities in the second half, including two near-goals in the final 10 minutes. "He's our man," said Eagles coach Walt Witkowski. "He did some great work at the end, but he's been doing that all along for us. He helped us win the metro championships with play like that." LA CUEVA 1, MAYFIELD 0 (SO): The top-seeded Bears (18-2-1) survived a defensive slugfest as goalie Nate Schaefer rose to the occasion in the shootout. The game had only 12 total shots in regulation and two sudden-death overtimes. La Cueva got the upper hand early in the shootout when Alberto Marquez clanged Mayfield's first shot off the left post, then Schaefer made a diving stop of Mark Rey's shot on the Trojans' next try. "I was nervous, yeah, but that first shot helped," Schaefer said. "Making the save on the other one just built my confidence." GIRLS LA CUEVA 2, CLEVELAND 1 (SO): The second-seeded Bears (19-2) are back in the finals for the first time in three years. Emily Cubbage of the Storm (19-2) scored in the game's first minute, stunning La Cueva. That got the attention of the Bears and coach Amber Ashcraft. "They only lost one game this year and only had three goals scored on them all year," Ashcraft said. "We knew they would be a hard team to score on." But Megan Thompson did get the equalizer, in the 17th minute for La Cueva. That was the first goal Cleveland had surrendered since Sept. 26. Eventually, the teams needed PKs. La Cueva went 5-for-5 at the line. "When you think of high school soccer, you think of Eldorado and La Cueva," said Bears junior Lauren Krummel, who had the game-winner Friday. "It was pretty nerve-racking." ELDORADO 1, LAS CRUCES 0 (OT): The eighth-seeded Eagles (17-6) continued their impressive run, outlasting No. 4 Las Cruces. Eldorado scored fairly early in the first 10-minute OT session. Emily Walters was at the corner of the box when she sent a perfect pass to sophomore Gemma Biasetto, who finished with a shot into the far corner from about 10 yards out. "It's a roller coaster," Biasetto said. "We're just happy we got on a roll." "It's exactly like you draw it up," Eldorado coach Tom Hirschman said.
