Don't let the 42 points fool you. This was a night for the Volcano Vista defense.

The third-seeded Hawks (10-1) blocked a punt, had a pick-6 and also recorded a safety Friday at Milne Stadium as they beat visiting Silver 42-20 in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

It was the first playoff game in Volcano Vista history, and the script was not surprising.

The sixth-seeded Colts (9-3) had a 13-7 lead late in the first quarter before the Hawks reeled off 35 straight points to seize control.

Volcano Vista rushed for 281 yards, with senior tailback Matt Sandoval getting 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback David Lehocky threw for 113 yards and three TDs.

"I just felt like offensively, we were popping off 10, 12 yards a carry, and defensively, we just needed a couple of stops to win this game," said Hawks coach Chad Wallin.

The teams traded touchdowns in an entertaining first quarter that ended in a 13-all draw.

For Silver, it was a touchdown pass from Zack Reyes to Jacob Zunich for a 7-0 lead and a 11-yard run by Aaron Huerta for a 13-7 lead.

For Volcano Vista, it was a 58-yard strike from Lehocky to Kevin Herrera, and an 8-yard scamper by Sandoval.

It was about here that the Hawks' defense began to assert itself.

Brandon Hoff stormed in to block a punt early in the second quarter, leading to a 1-yard TD run by Sandoval and a 19-13 edge.

Three plays into Silver's next possession, Volcano Vista's Seth Gonzales stepped in front of a receiver and returned a Reyes interception 31 yards for another score.

"I was gonna kill him if he didn't get that pick-6," Wallin said with a laugh.

Just before halftime, Volcano Vista made it 33-13 as Lehocky threw 14 yards to Joe Hinojosa with 14.9 seconds to go in the quarter.

The Hawks forced a safety early in the fourth, and that was followed by a 5-yard TD pass from Lehocky to Sandoval.

"The defense, they stepped it up when they needed to," said Sandoval.

The Hawks play No. 2 Goddard or No. 7 Farmington in next week's semifinals. The Scorpions and Rockets meet this afternoon in Roswell.
