AG's Web Site Lets You Check on Charities

The Associated Press
SANTA FE   —   New Mexicans will be able to check out charities through the attorney general's Web site.

AG's Charity Page
Attorney General Patricia Madrid, announcing the service Tuesday, said people think more about giving to charities as the holiday season approaches.
"My office advises the public to give, but give wisely," she said. "We urge the public to ask questions and do some basic research to determine who receives the contribution and how the money is spent."
The Web site, a collaborative effort with Guidestar, a national database of nonprofit organizations, is aimed at answering questions about charities.
The GuideStar database, which contains information about more than 850,000 organizations, is the nation's premier source of data on U.S. nonprofit organizations, Madrid said. GuideStar is a project of the nonprofit Philanthropic Research Inc. of Williamsburg, Va.
Madrid's office said the Web site should be useful to the public, the media and the charities themselves.
