Nature's beauty on display in Harwood show
By Aurelio Sanchez
Journal Staff Writer
Placitas photographer Lenore Goodell knows what she's after when she's photographing New Mexico's classic flowers and landscapes.
"With each area, I attempt to reveal an intimate glimpse of life and place through flora and the surrounding earth and air," she said.
Goodell said she hopes her work is interesting aesthetically, especially to people who love the state's scenic beauty. Examples of some of the plant life featured her show at the Harwood Art Center are coral bells, fairy slipper, osha and shadow grass.
"Though the subject is quite traditional, (I hope) those who love native plants might see their favorite botanicals in a somewhat different light," she said.
Goodell said the exhibition mainly features areas she photographed in the Placitas area, from the Bernalillo watershed to high trails in the Sandias.
"I began photographing flowering plants and shrubs in 2005 and I continue to find new plants and places to explore every year," she said.
Describing her approach to photographing her subjects, Goodell said each photo should capture identifying features, and "convey an idea of the experience of surroundings, and add up to a beautiful image."
While most of the exhibition features photos taken in the Sandia Mountains, two sets of photos are included from the Jemez Mountains.
Goodell, 65, grew up in the Bronx in New York City, and later graduated from New York University. She came to Albuquerque in 1967, and in 1968 earned an master of fine arts from the University of New Mexico.
