'Quilts' Project Helps Kids Find Connections

By Aurelio Sanchez
Journal Staff Writer
Quilts serve to show children the fabric of not only their rich and often lugubrious past, but also of the potential and promise of their future, a Newchild Productions representative said.
Juba Clayton said that's the message in Karen Jones Meadows' “Quilts: Connecting Lives, Connecting Generations” in a youth performance at the new African-American Performing Arts Center & Exhibit Hall commemorating Mother's Day.
“Quilts historically have been passed down in generations,” Clayton said. “They created beauty in the midst of deprivation and poverty.
“We wanted children to understand and to realize that they are part of the fabric of who we are, and that it's important for them to learn not only our stories and our histories, but to create new stories and to pass those on,” Clayton said.
The production is presented by Newchild Productions and The Charlie Morrisey Education Center.
About 40 children will be part of the debut of the Youth & Children Theatre Group, of the African American Performing Arts Center. The students range in age from 6 to 13.
The play presents quilts as an important symbol in African-American culture, representing attributes like resourcefullness, connectedness and creativity, Clayton said.
Those ideas will be expressed by students performing dance, prose, poetry and songs, some original, and others by well known African-American writers and composers, Clayton said.
Since its opening last July, the performance center has been the venue for other productions, but this will be the first youth production.
“These children are learning about not only performance, but every aspect of stage productions, from doing publicity to stage lighting to selling tickets,” Clayton said, adding that's important because the state is experiencing a new and emerging film industry.
“It's so important that these children learn how to use their imaginations to envision a new future, and I think audiences will enjoy seeing children feel good about themselves, and feeling proud of what they've learned,” Clayton said.
