¡Globalquerque! Film Series Starts Friday

By David Steinberg/
Journal Staff Writer
The upcoming ¡Globalquerque! international music festival has spun off a film series.
A batch of international films will be screened at the Guild Cinema Friday, Sept. 15 through Thursday, Sept. 21.
The music festival follows on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
"It is a film adjunct of their (music) festival," said Peter Conheim, co-owner of the Guild. "We curated it together. They came up with most of the works and I organized it."
The films come from some of the countries that are represented in the music festival, Conheim said.
Two of the films, "Shanda" and "Neria," contain music written by Oliver Mtukudzi, the Zimbabwean singer who is performing at the music festival.
On most days, two films are being presented as a double bill.
This is the schedule of the films in the Guild series:
-- Friday and Saturday. "A Voice from Heaven: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan" with the short "Laguna Woman" at 2:30 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. And "Sumatran Folk Cinema" with "Festival in the Desert" at 4:30 p.m. and 8:40 p.m.
       -- Sunday. "Genghis Blues" at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
    -- Monday and Tuesday. "Neria" at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and "Shanda" at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
-- Wednesday. "Changing Times" at 3:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. and "Do You Remember Dolly Bell?," which the Guild had tentatively listed, at 5 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
-- Thursday. "Baaba Maal: A Voice for Africa" at 4:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. and "Phi Ka Thon: Ghosts of Isan" at 5:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5 general public for the first double feature and $7 for the second set. Seniors and students are $5.
Tickets are available at the box office. The Guild is located at 3405 Central NE.
