When it comes to building an audience, children are as important as adults to veteran singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb.
That is why she is releasing another CD this year that’s aimed at youngsters.
“ ‘Camp Lisa’ is a mix of classic songs like ‘Home on the Range’ and silly classic songs,” Loeb said in a phone interview.
The album also will have some of her originals on themes of going away or meeting new friends, she said, and others inspired by songs that she had heard when she herself was a kid in camp.
Loeb said the proceeds of the sale of the CD will be donated to an organization that helps to send underprivileged kids to summer camp.
She also is working on a new album aimed at the adult audience.
Loeb will be in concert Thursday, April 24, at El Rey Theater.
There’s a third recording project that’s already out this year. Titled “Purple Tape,” it was released last January. As its name suggests, “Purple Tape” initially came out as a cassette tape.
“I (re-issued it now) by popular demand. People have been asking for it for 10 to 15 years,” Loeb said. “I finally got it together to remix and remaster it.”
It is actually a two-CD set. Part of the second CD contains interviews with her about the craft of songwriting and about the business side of being a singer-songwriter.
“I’ve heard from hundreds of musicians who take music seriously, but not from professional musicians. I thought this could be beneficial for them to hear about my journey, about how I got to where I am,” Loeb said.
That same interview CD also has what may be her most famous composition, “Stay (I Missed You).” That song was on the 1994 film soundtrack album “Reality Bites.” And it was also on her own CD “Tails,” which came out the following year.
From the standpoint of her career, “Stay (I Missed You)” was a No. 1 hit single and her breakout song. And it reappeared on her 2006 “Very Best of Lisa Loeb” compilation. On that recording she wrote this in the liner notes about the song: “I always love playing this song live. It was written about an argument with my boyfriend at the time, and (is) more autobiographical than most of my other songs.”
Loeb said many people are buying that two-CD set, especially fans who have been requesting it, she said.
Loeb, who grew up in Dallas, began songwriting in high school. By the time she was in college — she attended Brown University — she had made a couple of recordings.
“Brown was the perfect place for me to be at that time,” said Loeb, who attended the Rhode Island school in the late 1980s. “The students were very supportive (of me as a singer), starting from my very first show, which was a packed house. At the same time there was a large music community on campus and it made me rise to the occasion.”
Loeb set up her El Rey concert after she finalized plans to attend a writing workshop with Natalie Goldberg of Taos. Joining her at the workshop will be her mother and sister.
