Please give frozen duo a warm welcome

By Adrian Gomez
Journal Staff Writer
Lucy Tight and Wayne Waxing can't wait to make it out to the West Coast.
The duo behind Hymn for Her have been experiencing winter at its worst. From the snowstorm that blanketed the East Coast, the twosome often found themselves driving on icy roads.
"We're ready to defrost," Waxing said during a recent interview from Alabama. "But it's been a great tour so far. Fans are braving the cold and coming out to see us. We can't ask for more."

WHERE: Cowgirl BBQ, 319 S. Guadalupe St., Santa Fe
HOW MUCH: $3 at the door

Waxing and Tight met while playing in other bands. A couple years ago, they decided to put a group together and tour the country.
"It just felt right," Tight said. "We were dating and we started a family. We wanted to have both a career and family, so we bought an Airstream and started traveling."
Waxing described Hymn for Her's music as very minimal. He said there's an Americana/country sound to the music.
"We just write about what we know," he said. "Sometimes it's a little country and sometimes it's a little rock and roll. We don't really have a genre that we fit in."
Waxing said he wasn't exposed to the variety of music until he was almost a teenager.
"I had to catch up when I discovered all this new music," he said. "But that led me to study jazz at Temple University."
When Waxing met Tight, he said they were a perfect pair.
"I had the structure of jazz and music theory," he said. "She knew how to write songs and bring in all the elements to make them sound great. Once we started working, it was magic."
Waxing said Hymn for Her's live show is always changing but they like to be very visual.
"We usually bring a slide projector and a screen and show some slides that go with our music," he said. "It's a way to tell our story, and it's very old school."
The band is touring in support of its album "The Amairican Stream."
Tight explained that life on the road can be challenging when traveling with a 3-year-old. But she said she's grateful for the opportunity to be able to balance her family and career.
