Young Composers Get Recognized for Works
Journal Staff Report
Santa Fe New Music has announced five young composers who have been selected as winners in the 2009 New Mexico Young Composers' Project.
This is the ninth year of the awards, administered by SFNM since 2001. The project includes a statewide call for submissions from composers 18 and younger, offering them the opportunity for professional review and public performance.
Five young composers were selected as winners by the professional musician panel. A $50 cash prize has been awarded to the laureate composers. This year's winners are:
• Justine Flores, 9, of Albuquerque. Justine's work for piano is titled "Music Box." Justine is home-schooled.
• Fourteen-year-old Morgan Ifversen, also of Albuquerque, for his work "Airdale Jazz," composed for jazz band. Morgan is a student at Albuquerque Academy.
• Ian Kingsolver of Placitas. This 11-year-old's composition for two violins and cello is titled "Journey to the Corona." He is a student at Desert Willow Family School in Albuquerque.
•Jaime Rodriguez, a student at St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque, is a 16-year-old and the composer of "Finals" for string orchestra.
• Kat Russo, 18, of Tijeras and now a graduate of Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, is the fifth laureate for her piano work, "Circular Confusion, Parts I and II."
Speaking of this year's group of awardees, SFNM's John Kennedy noted the pairing of musical ingenuity and sophistication with good technical ability in score preparation. "The panel found that the caliber of 'professionalism' among the young composers it sees improves each year," he said. "It is also really heartening to see a variety of musical styles represented among this year's winners, from piano etudes to jazz."
The young composers will be publicly honored at a Santa Fe New Music event to be announced later this season.
