  • Bailiwick
  • Contact: Mike Hays
  • Description: Have you ever heard the expression, "He's in his bailiwick"? It comes from a Middle English word from the legal profession, indicating the bailiff's corner of the courtroom. Nowadays, however, it refers more generally to a person's area of interest and expertise. In Albuquerque, it refers to a local international folk music band.
Bailiwick performs Celtic music for the most part, from poignant airs to break-neck jigs and reels. Our diverse interests, however, have compelled us to explore a variety of genres, peppering our set lists with Argentine tangos, Arabic folk tunes, Venezuelan vals crusados, Mexican and Spanish waltzes, English country dance tunes, and now renaissance and medieval pieces. Bailiwick plays regularly at a number of bars, stores, dances and weddings in Albuquerque. Bailiwick's musicians are Juli Palladino, Mike Hays, David Harper, and Marc and Susan McCamey.

  • Shelley Barratt
  • Contact: Shelley Barratt
  • Web site: Web site
  • Description: Shelley's adult contemporary world music is accompanied by guitar, random percussion or a cappella. Melodic vocals offer a rare level of intimacy to the listener, and the direction each song takes is unconventional yet accessible. It has been said that Shelley's vocals have a calming effect. When Shelley sings, people stop what they are doing and listen to the original music: melodic and poetic, blending rhythms from around the world, inspiring harmony in living. Shelley plays rhythm guitars, using either an Ovation acoustic/electric or Samick Royale semi hollow-body, and a Djembe drum as well as classic percussion instruments.
Background info: Shelley was the lead in an Albuquerque rock band, Sub Culture, that released the independent album, "Seed Time". They received radio play and reviews all over New Mexico and as far away as the Coasts. Sub Culture was courted by several major record labels, and several members went on to have successful recording careers of their own.

Think Sam & Dave, Aretha, Freddie King, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Bobby Blue Bland, and Sam Cook, with a little bit of the Drifters and Muddy Waters thrown in.
Brother E (Eric Bland) was long known as the leading gospel singer among NMs Black churches when Gator Bleaux (lead guitarist) moved here from Austin and augmented Es musical tastes toward soul, blues and R&B. The producer of the Soul Train radio show described Brother E as a great singer with Sam Cook-looks and an Otis Redding soul.
Gator Bleaux (guitar) played for 10 years with T-Bone Turners Band and with Missing Pages in Austin, Texas. Bleaux has opened for or played with such other luminaries as SRV, Jimmie Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and with the legendary Chuck Berry. His guitar work is strongly influenced by the three Kings BB, Freddie, and Albert.
Bobby Clements (drums) is originally from California and was long-time drummer for the country-rock band, Country Generation. His solid beat is the heart of the Blue Rhythm Kings.

Playing acoustic pop/rock and folk covers from the 60's to the present, they perform regularly at many local establishments in the Albuquerque area, including Sandia Bowl Lounge, Molly's in Tijeras and Kokopelli's in Cedar Crest. • Evading Alastor
  • Contact: Justin Balthrop
  • Web site
  • Description: Evading Alastor's music is difficult to describe. It's familiar yet unexpected, comforting at times and painfully honest at others. Their lyrics are sometimes serious and introspective, sometimes carefree. The two lead singers take turns singing and writing songs, which gives their music a diverse flavor. However, their shared musical influence from artists like Toad the Wet Sprocket, Coldplay, Counting Crows, John Mayer, U2 and the Police gives the music coherence as well. Most of Evading Alastor's songs are largely driven by acoustic guitar and memorable vocal melodies, but there is also a strong modern rock presence in the bass, drums, and electric guitar.

Leading our cast of characters is vocalist/acoustic-guitarist Minie (also of The Minie Gonzalez Band), with bassist Zoltan (also of The Old Main and The Zoltan Trio), drummer Gus (also of The Cranks) and vocalist/guitarist Rob. Setting forth on the idea that music is a nebulous organism, their sound has been not-so-simply described as: "...Alt-Folk Pop Punk Hardcore (Radio Mike of www.thefeveredbrainofradiomike.com)." That's about as succinct as youll get it, folks, because there's no formula. Each song exists as its own creature and grows how it needs to grow.

All of this madness came about due to John Sandlin and Muni Kulasinghe's mutual love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940's Paris, which included the combined genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. Jared Putnam's western swing background has fused istelf into the mix and given us a fine repertoire of classic western swing tunes. In the meantime Fernando Garavito's latin background has seeped into the rhytmic pallet and given us a formidable groove.

In 2000, by a chance mutual friendship, Jason's demo fell into the hands of Joey Belville (The Echoing Green), who in turn produced a three-track demo for submission to the independent label, A Different Drum. Jason was instantly signed to a full album deal. In 2003, keyboardist Darla VanWinkle joined the band, and went on to co-write the sophomore album, "Parallel Universe," released in 2005. • Ciano Maés
  • Contact: Ciano Maés
  • Web site
  • Description: It's been raining singer/songwriters lately, and Ciano Maés has splashed onto the scene with a fresh new flavor. The Albuquerque native is somewhat of a prodigy, having taught himself how to play piano by age 6, drums by the time he was 11, and guitar by 13. In high school, Ciano performed in several talent shows, which thrust him out from behind his drum kit into the spotlight as a singer songwriter. That taste of the limelight was enough to start Ciano on his way, and from there he began honing his writing and singing skills.

After a brief stint on tour with a cover band, Ciano moved to LA to attend Musician's Institute, and he began playing regular gigs on the club scene. There, he caught the attention of Hollywood producers, publishing companies and local radio. Ciano was asked to perform and record demos to be considered for soundtrack material and has had songs recorded and published by other recording artists. Wanting to focus on his songwriting and not the wants of industry moguls, Ciano moved back to New Mexico to build his studio and fine-tune the creative process. In the midst of all of this, Ciano has been scouted by several record companies but says, "I'm simply looking for the right situation. It needs to be about the integrity of the songs and delivering great music that has meaning to the listeners.

Ciano is actively producing artists as well as writing songs for his forthcoming CD. Those close to the project are offering much praise (and record companies are taking notice). The highly anticipated release is set to be announced via the www.songkid.com Web site. Stay tuned...
